Mission accomplished! Cheer Camp 2011 was done with 3 objectives in mind: getting back in shape physically, revising our foundational cheer stunts and trying out new stunts for the routine. It was a gruelling week for many of us as we had 9 training sessions over 5 days, which include PT, jumps, gymnastics, dance and of course stunting. However though training was tough I am sure all of us had fun in the process, swaying our hips to the music and going for supper on one of the nights! Alas there was no official photographer for this camp, but I hope pictures will be out soon! :)

I think everyone should have a look at this. Look at how nobody is giving up when things don't go well. Also, look at how the other teammates cheered her on.

Sometimes, a stunt does not always go up nicely, but if possible, if everyone is fighting for the stunt, the least one could do is don't give up. Fighting a stunt is part of parcel of cheerleading. It's important to know how to fight a stunt because during practise, yes, we can try and try all we want until we hit the stunt, but if it's the real competition or a performance, we don't have that luxury of trying over again. Therefore, in competitions, it's all about fighting stunts if things were to not go so well, so might as well make use of normal training to also learn how to fight stunts instead of giving up. That way, you can gain some experience and if similar situation were to occur during competition(touch wood), you know how to handle it.

I believe as cheerleaders, we should have the never give up attitude. After all, we are supposed to cheer people on. How are we supposed to do that if we can even cheer and motivate ourselves?

what is a ''level 5'' routine

Hi Peeps,

I have got news that there is a possibility of HO being judged under a ''level 5'' scoring system this year. Although this news is not official, it is always good to know what is a ''level 5'' and the things you should look out for.

1) Basket tosses that you can do are restricted to:

Toe touch, around the world, pike, kick single full, kick double fulls (being the highest scoring basket toss).

No head over heel stunts allowed. ie: no backtucks, no layouts,

2) Gymnastics - the usual standing and running gymnastics apply. you are not restricted to a 3 pass tumbling sequence so long as you do not tumble off the mats.

3) Dance - compulsory component.

4) Jumps - the more variety the better. ie: Pike, toetouch, herkie

5) Pyramids - max 2 man height. eg, liberty hitch, M-pyramids.

Pyramids that are NOT allowed are for example - 221, gladiator, flat backs, swedish falls.

Take note that you are allowed to, however, do stunts which will go beyond the 2 man height so long as the stunt does not hit beyond the 2 man height. eg: Fork lifts

6) Group stunts - 2 man or 3 man group stunts. The more flexibility elements you can display, the better. ie: scorpions, heel stretches, bow and arrows are high scoring elements. Dismounts are very important as well. Single full downs, double full downs. Arabian/front tuck dismounts are NOT allowed.

While the above info is FYI, do clarify with the HO committee which rules they are using. If you want to win, you most certainly have to play by the rules.

Do take a look at this video. It's quite a clean routine, and the stunts are quite achievable!

PS. To all the freshie, if you are still deciding, do still come down for trainings. Give cheerleading a chance, you may find yourself enjoying it a lot, like i did. I'm currently in sweden right now for exchange, and one of the things i miss a lot is cheer trainings. It gives me an avenue to forget about school work for a while and just enjoy myself. To be able to hit stunts give me a sense of satisfaction, knowing that someone like me(not very big sized or muscular), can be a cheerleader. When i first started cheerleading, i really didn't think i would stay on. But after a few months of training, i began to enjoy it more, and wanting more to improve myself. Cheerleading is now a big part of my hall life, and i hope by joining, you will feel the same. Trust me, the feeling after you complete a routine for HO is awesome. The sweat, the efforts, at the end of the day, when you hear the crowd cheer for us(cheerleaders) and their roaring applause for, you will feel that everything is worth it. You can have a taste of it by watching the videos of past competitions. Team Spectrum always get roaring applause and cheers. I've been in many activities that requires me to be on stage, and i can honestly say, the most awesome feeling comes from a cheerleading performance. Therefore, do give cheerleading a chance, also give yourself a chance to try something you'll probably never get to try outside of hall. Uni life is short, and probably your last few years to really enjoy yourself and commit to try something new.

Attendance and Committment

Hi guys! Recently I feel that there have been issues about getting everyone to come down for training and to get everyone down on time as well.

If you are still considering if you wish to join cheerleading or not, PLEASE COME DOWN for trainings first as every training you miss is a lost chance at improving your cheer basics and techniques.

If you have study committments (e.g. project meetings, quizzes, deadlines) or CCA committments outside cheer, PLEASE try to manage your time around cheer trainings. Many of us also have to cope with these committments as well and this is a chance for you to master your time management skills! Also we will take a break from training about a month before exams so that everyone can study hard for exams! Of course if you have an urgent committment that cannot be changed please let Suelin or I know, we are understanding people too! ;)

All in all I know that everyone has to make some sacrifices to come for trainings, for me I am also missing out on the time to study and to spend time with friends in hall. Please try to arrange your time around cheer trainings as much as possible so that we can all improve as a team! As I mentioned in my debrief just now, I hope to focus more on the training content than to worry if my team members are actually attending trainings or not. Cya on Thursday!

1) Publicity/ IT Officers (x2)

Manage the Spectrum blog and Facebook page
Design posters and/or T-shirts for Spectrum events (Cheer Camp, Cheer Clinic, Spectrum bonding, Spectrum Anniversary)
Design any props that we need for Hall Olympiad (banner, flag, etc)

2) Welfare Officers (x1)

Organise Spectrum bonding events and arrange food for Spectrum Anniversary
Organise monthly birthday celebration for Spectrum members!

3) Logistic Officers (x1)

Manage all Spectrum logistics (uniform, mats, props, banners etc)
Organise mats washing if necessary

4) Business Managers (x2)

Look out for and arrange canvassing opportunities for Spectrum

hey guys! I just attended the JCRC rally and I feel inspired to share with you all that we are not only Spectrum members, but also Hall 13 residents! So do look out for all the activities that are organised by the Hall and take part in those that will interest you. The next hall event is coming up NEXT Monday, which is the Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration, so we have to reschedule our training as the celebration coincides with the actual lunar August 15 so I can't argue about that... Veron said to me, "Aiyah, it's like that one lah, only the captain will be worried about the blog de."

True enough, I think my activity level in this blog increased by about 5 times since I took up the role of captain. (oh, if you don't know, I'm captain now, a blog on the main committee should be out soon). I would like to thank Choon Fu for giving me this opportunity to contribute to Team Spectrum, I hope that I won't let him down.

Spectrum gave me a lot of fond memories. Taking part in Hall Opening(Olympiad) when I was in year 1 was the best experience I have in NTU. Similarly missing out the chance to take part in HO when I was in year 2 was the biggest regret I have in NTU as well. The sweat, blood and tears shed during the HO period was definitely worth it and I had many wonderful seniors to support and encourage me when I was a junior.

Now I am the senior. Now I have to bring my team through the journey to HO. Now I have to create better memories with my juniors and give them the experience I felt when I was in year 1. But I know I am not alone, because I still have Suelin. And Huiyang. And Phei San. And Jeanette. And Choon Fu. and Wee Keat. And many many more.

There are definitely challenges ahead. Recruitment is an issue. Commitment is an issue. Team bonding is an issue. But I will forge ahead and continue with cheer trainings. Because I am happy when I train. And that's enough for me.

So that's that! It may be a new Spectrum in terms of the members, but may it be the old Spectrum where we are a family. Team Spectrum GO FOR THE WIN!

CHEER CLINIC 2011

Spectrum conducted our very own cheer clinic for the residents of Hall 13 on 22 August 2011 and it was a resounding success! (look at the number of people who turned up!) Residents and freshmen had a taste of cheerleading as they joined us for our warm up, stretching and locking exercises. Then they were split into groups and roamed different stations trying out elevator, shoulder sit, on ground extension (not ground up extension!) and also our very own trust fall (with our trusty crash mat at the bottom). After that we also let some of the girls try how it feels like to be on the very top of the pyramid stunt. We hope that this cheer clinic has allowed residents to gain a better understanding of how tough cheerleading is and also piqued the interest of some of our residents, new and old, to join the Spectrum family.

So join us! A new life awaits you!

A belated post for freshman welcome dinner!

First and foremost, I would like to thank all the seniors who came down despite having a busy schedule and having work the next day, thank you seniors! Having moral support from you guys is one of the drive to keep the team alive :D

Next, on behalf of Team Spectrum, I would like to thank Vikings for training with us, providing us a place to train etc. It's indeed a nice experience training with you guys! Thank you Vikings!

Even though most of us were nervous (maybe because the audience is hall 13?), I'm glad that it was an ASU performance and love the claps from the audience! What else could be more rewarding than the thunder claps from the audience right?! :DDD

Join us on the 22nd August and have fun! You'll get to try out some simple stunts that you have never tried before in your entire life! This is also an opportunity to get to know more people from the hall.

What attire to come in?
Come down in your sports attire (t-shirt, shorts and sports shoes). We would advise you to wear contact lenses on that day, but it's alright if you don't have them. Bring along your water bottle as you would need to hydrate yourself.

For the guys, do come down in a dark coloured T-shirt. Avoid coming in singlet.

For the girls, do wear tights. For shoes, we would recommend flat sole shoes if possible, but any sports shoes will be fine for that day.

Some Definitions
Bases: Cheerleaders that stay on the ground providing the primary support for the flyer during a stunt.

Flyers: These are the people that is in the air during a stunt.

Why come down?
I believe most people would not have tried cheerleading(with stunts) before, so we're giving everyone in hall 13 an opportunity to try this out! Really, no experience is required. Just come down, experience cheerleading and have fun! Who knows? You may love what you see and join us. For those who don't, at least you tried and we thank you for giving us this opportunity.

For some guys, you might probably be thinking, "I don't think I am big and strong enough." To be honest, cheerleading is not fully about strength and size. We have male cheerleader as bases that are neither build nor tall. Stunts don't always depends on strength, but rather the techniques. So come down on that day, and we will show you what you are capable of doing.

For the girls, most would go "I cannot!!! I'm too fat/heavy la!" Again, cheer is not about size or weight, but rather the technique. Most of our flyers are not super-skinny or feather-weight, they are all normal girls! I believe you would have already seen the pictures in the facebook album. Everytime a flyer goes up in the air, all the attention will be on her. Come down for cheer clinic, and have a feel of what flying is all about!

Just think about it, where else can you try such stunts? We have the techniques, skills and the necessary safety precautions for you to learn and try cheerleading safely, and all that in the comfort of our own hall.

It may be interesting to also note that while we're a hall cheerleading team competing in Hall Olympiad, we also accept external public performances. Some of the videos are available in this blog. This means that your effort in training will not just be seen by people during Hall Olympiad, but also by people who are not from NTU(In fact, we had just completed an assignment for Milo Easy Cool and Singtel F1 in 2010). This, I feel, is great exposure and makes your training meaningful.

We only have 3 to 4 years in university. When you step out to work, it's almost impossible to find time and energy to try something new. It's up to you how you want to live your university life, and what you want to achieve while you are here. Give cheerleading a shot, feel the satisfaction and adrenaline rush, and make your NTU life a memorable one.

Recruitment Performance at Hall 5

Today we just had our 1st recruitment performance at Hall 5! Though it was not the most perfect performance we had put up, it was still a great job done and lots of efforts can be seen from the cheerleaders from Spectrum and Vikings to put up a good show. And the free stunting after that was even better (for us and for the publicity to the freshies), because everyone had a go to try out their partner stunts. Suelin: our toss to hands will be there soon!

And many special thanks to the seniors who came down to support us: Veron, Chris, Brian, Sirong, Derrick and Lina! Hope to see more seniors and Spectrum cheerleaders to come down and support us next Tuesday on 16 August 2011 for our recruitment performance at Hall 13. See you there!

The end of 10/11 Season...

Time really flies... just a blink of an eye, I'm stepping down as captain of Spectrum with Sam taking over me.. For the past few days, memories and feelings flooded me, making me incapable of focusing on studying for the new sem.. haha!!

I miss the times when seniors and juniors alike return to basics training to prepare for the new season..

Really thankful for veron and fai for choosing me to take over them.. and to the team, we may now walk separate path, but the memories shall always be with me.. Love Spectrum Deep Deep..

For now, i'm just looking forward for the new batch of freshmen to join the Spectrum Family and start their era together with the current batch and make Spectrum part of the life...

2 more days to Spectrum's and Viking's combined performance at Hall 5's welcome dinner and we were stuck without a place to train yet again! In a desperate move, we placed the mats at the grass area in the amphitheatre. The field is not wet so the mats won't get muddy, right?!

Oh well, at least for the next 2-3 years we would be smart enough not to do that again. Who wants to help us clean mats!!!

Good Day to All Coaches/Team Managers, INITIATIVE TO FORM SINGAPORE’S VERY OWN CHEERLEADING NATIONAL TEAM The Federation of Cheerleading Singapore is proposing the formation of our very own local Cheerleading National Team. In lieu of the upcoming IFC Cheerleading World Championships 2011, which will be held in Hong Kong in Mid November, we are well-positioned and well-timed to field a team of the best cheerleaders in Singapore to compete. FCS is excited to announce that we are holding our National Tryouts on the 16th AND 17th April, from 10am to 4pm. Venue will be confirmed again. Please be informed that players considered for the National Team would have to follow these guidelines: 1) Commitment to 2 trainings a week (Tuesday Nights and Saturday Mornings, subject to location availability) 2) Availability for competition during 2nd or 3rd week (To be confirmed) of September 2011 for the 3rd Asian-Thailand Cheerleading Invitational 2011, held in Nimibutra Stadium, Bangkok Thailand. 3) Availability during 1st 3 weeks of November 2011 (To be confirmed) for the 6th IFC Cheerleading World Championship 2011, Hong Kong. The Co-Ed National Team is planned to consist of 9 Males and 7 Females and 4 reserves. Team Players will be sponsored by FCS and its partners/sponsors for overseas competitions with adhering conditions. We would like to appeal to the Coaches/Team Managers to assist in the formation of the National Team by recommending players from their respective teams to send for the tryouts. The tryouts criteria for both male/female players will be released shortly. As this is the first time a National Team is formed by way of selecting from the entire pool of cheerleaders in Singapore, we would like to appeal to players to step forward to represent their country in this initiative. With the talent exhibited in the 2nd SNCC 2011, the Singapore National Team is projected to do well in the upcoming championship(s) on the International Stage! _________________________________________________

This is quite a long overdue post >.<

I know I have watched our HO video hundreds of times, I watched almost all the videos taken by different people from different angle, and I just can't stop myself from watching them once in a while.

Yeps I just watched the video a few times just now and I would like to highlight some parts of the video! :)

1. I love the energy of everyone! The 'Power Rangers' at the beginning part is so POWER!!! haha.

2. I love the formation we did before the final stunts sequence! See how Megazord did the formation with us and it's so in sync! :D

I think I don't have to say much about all the stunts hor. Everyone put in their best efforts and that's good enough.

So I want to say about something that is not exactly in the routine. See the few seconds before everyone got into their first position, what was everyone doing? :) I bet the high5 from each other meant a lot. It's assurance, confidance, encouragement, comfort.. I was really happy to see that in Spectrum :)

so, thanks everyone who is directly or indirectly to make HO 2011 a success! Thanks team Spectrum, coach Vincent, Hall 13 and everyone! :)

Now that HO is over, and we have gotten third out of 16 halls, it's time for Spectrum to thank those who made all these possible.

The first is of course to our coach, Vincent. Thank you for being mean to us, for implementing all the unimaginable PTs (buddha claps!!), for not being contented at whatever we do, for pointing out every small little mistakes that we do, for finding fault with everything, for demanding perfection. Thanks for the endurance runs, it woke us up to our senses. Thanks for not pampering us. Thank you, for being the devil.

To Hall 13 JCRC, especially Amin, we are grateful for the physical and financial support given to us. And also for garnering support from the residents. Most notably, the last minute banner that made such a huge difference to our routine!

To Hall 13 residents, thanks for being there for the showcase, we have never seen such tremendous support in all our previous years! Thanks for all the words of encouragement and most importantly, for SCREAMING your lungs out on HO itself!

We're also grateful to hall 12 Bulldouzers and hall 5 Vikings, for sharing their mats with us, or else it would be impossible to have a 10X10 mats for running routine. And everytime we run our routine, you guys will be cheering us on. Thank you!

We definitely will not forget our seniors for their physical and mental support during trainings and on HO. Cong Yan, Chaangru, Kah Xian, Lawrence, Shuen Min, Barney, Wen Feng, Kang Jun, Sirong, Yinxue, Katherine, Chan Fai - Thank you for your encouragment, words of wisdom and opinions regarding our routine. Thanks for the Macs supper too (kx, sm, law)! Once again, we would like to thank Eddie for his $50 contribution to our canvassing fund!

Spectrum is extemely thankful to Wildcards for being around at our trainings to help out, give advices, spot for us and spur us on. Thanks for cheering for us on HO day too! We wish Wildcards all the best for Nationals and we'll definitely be rooting for WCT to bag the championship!

Hi Spectrum!

I guess all of you are all enjoying your CNY holidays now and taking a short mini break from HO. Reading that you guys manage to complete your routine so early makes me very very proud of you guys! I remember the days when Jianing cant climb up a shoulderstand and Nabil can only toss Xingtong. :P Im sure these HO trainings turned everyone into better cheerleaders and Im looking forward to the wonderful stunts by the seniors!

I saw some walkthrough videos from other halls (okay it was just one hall) and I really missed the days when we toiled and slogged to perfect the routine. This will definitely be a positive experience in your hall life (in fact it is my proudest one) and you can count on me to be back for the next HO!! Actually Im quite guilty because I did not push myself hard last semester, thinking that I will not be in this HO so Im counting on you guys to coach me along when Im back in June.

Meanwhile, it is the final stretch to HO and I wish you all the best!! LETS GO FOR THE WIN!

Hi Spectrum,

We are reaching the finishing line and the end of the season. Standing in front of the team during the full run in SRC on 1st Feb, I was proud of you guys on that presentation. Though not a perfect performance, I could sense the collective effort to perform the routine. That was good, but as the coach, I need to spur you guys to achieve better.

I am thankful to have lead and known Spectrum for 2011 HO. I couldn’t have asked for a more self-motivated team. How the committee got the team going through the trainings without me, knowing what you needed to do so that you will not incur my wrath ;) But somehow, no matter how hard you tried, there is still flaws that I would pick at. Who would have known you could complete my school runs? You guys managed to struggle through my thigh burning PTs, and Spectrum came out HARDER, BETTER , FASTER, STRONGER.

Did you all remember the 1st time I visited the team, during debrief, I asked everyone what they wanted to achieve during HO? Perhaps you did not accomplish all your goals. If you did, very good! Don’t be discouraged if you didn’t; some skills really require a longer time to master.
Trainings will never be easy, but I’m glad everyone persevered, and survived. The team definitely got fitter, some better in shape :D

In terms of stunt skill improvement, I guess it’s less significant on the seniors due to time, different responsibilities and stress. Again, good job on the juniors for chasing up on par. This season, there was a lot of mental work involved. The team started out unsure if the juniors can fill the rolls in time, team dynamics not there, new Imports from previous halls. Somehow, we managed to work as a team.

I see it more as understanding each other’s strengths and weakness, accepting it and helping each other fill up the short-falls. It is also about backing each other to push for greater heights. Encouraging your team to persevere, to weather shit together.

It will never be the best member combination. But you’ve got to make good use of who you have. It will never be the perfect team synergy. Unless you believe in it, and trust that it will work.

“self-HIGH” people will get low and unmotivated at times too... But they get recharged when they see those whom they are encouraging respond. Keep the energy going ok?

I am glad we did a full routine on 1st Feb, for I can safely say, you can enjoy your Lunar New Year without worrying that your routine has yet complete. 3 more trainings, a lot more polishing to do. I know you guys can make it.

Introducing... the Milo cheerleaders!!

On the 13th Jan 2011, 11 Spectrum cheerleaders transformed into Milo cheerleaders to promote Milo's newest product to a bunch of aunties and uncles and a very encouraging italian boss hahahahaha, who smiled and nodded throughout the performance.

It was especially memorable for me as it was my first routine performance as a cheerleader! Putting on the milo packet 'uniform', hitting stunts to the music and cheering my guts out felt great. I think that despite all the difficulties that we had, with height problems and all, it was a really fun performance :)

Thanks Veron, for always pushing us on and coming up with the routine for us! Thanks Choonfu, Dajun and Mathew for pushing on despite being unwell!

Spectrum Cheer Camp

i was unable to fall asleep so i decided to write this post on our cheer camp that ended last week. i managed to finally register as this is my first time using blog. -.-' Well, this is my second time writing this cos i accidentally closed the browser before i can publish it during the first time. FML... Pardon for my CUI Ang Moh.

Monday was the start of the camp. Luckily or unluckily (depending on how u see it), vincent was unable to make it but training still carried on with a certain degree of xiongness. A lot of us were still nursing the aches suffered from the mini game ah fu played the previous week. (JUST squats with flyers on shoulder sits)

Tuesday was a bit slack i think as there was only the afternoon session. at night, we went to the airport to send Samuel (a.k.a aunty lucy) off for his overseas exchange program.

Wednesday was the start of the "Eat, Cheer, Sleep" routine. Well, that was what i did. When i thought my muscle aches were starting to disappear, and there came PT sessions. "No Pain, No Gain eh" I never longed for my bed so badly in my Uni life.

Out of the 5 days, Thurday's night training was the most memorable. Vincent had a little surprise for all of us. A "short" run around the campus. Even though i am a student in NTU, i never knew that are so many slopes in the campus. Though tough and tiring, no one gave up. We started and completed the run as a team. Applause for everyone especially yang yang and Da Liang. everyone was high on adrenaline and spirits were high too. we managed to hit stunts that was once unhittable.

after training was a shopping trip to NTUC to buy food for the steamboat the next day. We treated the place as our playground. Imagine Vincent in the trolley as Ah fu pushing him around. -.-' It was also then that i learned about the 2 golden rule if u wan to sit ah fu's car:

1. Never say it is a school ***

2. Never touch anything in the car. "Just Shut Up And Lock"

The long awaited friday finally came but many of us were showing signs of burnout and falling sick including Vincent. training was toned down as many of us had IHG on that day. Vincent plans of having a dip in the pool was also burnt as the girls refused to enter. the idea of it being a CF (****fest) just turned everyone off.

steamboat at night was awesome. there was this homey feel though it was held in the function hall. it was also my first time watching TV in hall... -.-'

Actually, cheer camp is just the start of the hectic training schedule that is to come in the following week. Training will definitely be tougher when HO is approaching. Here's a few quotes if u need inspiration:

"Without the bases the stunt wouldn't work. Remember that and always thank your bases for a good job well done!"

"Cheerleading makes people think differently... suddenly a liberty isn't just a statue in NY, pyramides aren't something you find in Egypt, and gladiators aren't people of ancient Rome"

Cheerleading is a sport where teamwork is of utmost importance. The team is only as strong as the weakest link. Do not cheer for the sake of doing it. You have to be happy so as to enjoy the whole process. 台上三分钟，台下十年功.

First and foremost, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.

Yesterday was the last paper for many NTU students, including me. The end of the final paper marks the start for something. I looked back in my past 22 years of life and i don't really recall when was the last time I really really work hard for something.

Back in the army days, I managed to achieve a IPPT Gold through peer pressure and fear. Fear that if I did not get the IPPT Gold, I will have to suffer more intensive training while others are playing soccer in the field. Fear that I will not be able to fit into the crowd if everyone around you is doing so much better and you are just not performing up to the standard.

I still remember to at the start of the semester, I set some targets that I would want to achieve by HO. I still can remember what I said :

1) Standing Backtuck

2) Toss to Hands

So this time round, I will not let fear be the pushing factor that keep me going. I myself will push myself to achieve what I want. No Pain No Gain. But i changed my goal a little ^_^

1) Round Off Backhand Spring

2) Toss to Hands

3) Standing Backtuck (Still want but after i achieve (1) 1st)

So what have I done today?

1) Around 4km Run

2) 20 minutes of stretching

3) 3 Sets of Static exercise including

i) 6 chip up

ii) 20 leg raise

iii) 20 push ups

iv) 20 crunches

hmm, I know I am a little behind time for this post, but I was having my exams (though I still ended early than some of you guys here...) Well 5 days before my first exam paper, ten of us from team spectrum went to cheer the runners on for the Standard Chartered Marathon 2010! 5TH ANNIVERSARY

GATHERING~

Last friday, 19 nov 2010, we sort of commemorated Spectrum's 5th anniversary by organising a BBQ session and invited all ex-Spectrum members back. Not everyone came back though, as expected due to busy work lifes and other committments, but the turnout was great nonetheless. :D

I was quite happy to see all the seniors coming back, and behaving as if they were still training together in hall 13. And I was even more happy to see that they still have a passion for cheer and still think of themselves as part of Spectrum. As much as spectrum has changed my live, I'm pretty sure Spectrum made a difference in theirs too. Thank you very much seniors! :)

We started the event off with a BBQ. And people started coming throughout the night. Wen Feng, Jun Hui, Lina, Colin and Lip Tat were among the first few to arrive, but food was not ready yet. Heeheehee. Anyway, to the juniors who may be unaware, Colin and Lip Tat came from PJC Team Syphors, which used to be coached under Spectrum. SAJC cheer squad was under us as well, but has since ceased to be cos cheer wasn't a highly approved sport in JC. To Colin and Lip Tat: do continue to cheer when you guys go to university ok? Join us if you can!!! :D

After lots of eating, chit-chatting, laughing, photo-taking and whatnots, came the oh-so-familiar "SPECTRUM, ON MATS!!" It was time to stunt (hey, cheerleaders gathering of cos must stunt!) and we see people changing into their stunting gear. Feels so much better than working clothes right :)

Once on the mats, everyone started to behave crazily and do stupid things. Kind of like a destress session for the working ones. It was a rare opportunity to stunt again after stepping out into the working world. Super funny to see the "rusty" seniors stunt again, using all sorts of cheatcode to get up the stunt. AND UNCLE LAWRENCE CANNOT DO EXTENSIONS ANYMORE! LOL!

Training keeps getting tougher and tougher.. But it keeps getting more and more interesting ^_^!! Last Saturday's exchange with Wildcards rekindled my spirit and passion that I have for cheerleading. For quite some time, I haven't felt so shag and tired, but yet so fulfilling. Keep it up SPECTRUM!!

I think that we keep forgetting the fundamental reason why we train! It's because we want to put up a GOOD SHOW FOR HO! If even better, for NATIONALS!

So Youjin, don't give up on the backtuck. Don't waste your time and effort now.. Make it happen on the mats! Same thing for my RO back-handspring! Come on people, keep the fire burning!

Hello Spectrum!

For those who dunno me, i m ah fai yup!

and for all, yup, its someone who MIAed for a verryyy longg time..
Still, I got read the blog from time to time update myself with all the new UPDATES!!!

Firstly, wanted to say that, the blog has really been upgraded/improved and also, been much livelier! Everytime I check in, i have to click "to Older Post" to start.. this shows how often you guys post! Great job la!

Next, Although I didn't been to trainings for a lonng time, I notice that, practically EVERYONE in Spectrum has imporved many many many levels.. Some even doing things I never done before, haven succeed in trying and others.. Congrats people!
I really got to give credits to all who Never stop giving up and keep on going! I m impressed!
I cant wait to see all the members to do their stunts myself! Show me when i go down for trainings ok??

I promise i try to go down for trainings more often ok. Just to cheer with you all, and even to learn from you all! =)

Hi, its me again, Mr Ong blogging at the wee hours of the night..

Today I did my 1st ever pitch toss 2-2-1 and the feeling is sibei SHIOK!! and BACKHAND SPRING!! It had never occurred to me that I am able to do a pitch toss because I think it is the limitation of my size. When Vincent ask me to do pitch toss, I totally give the STUNNED LOOK!! But I was wrong!! Nothing is impossible and we just got to keep trying and trying. Just like youjin and ah dee, both of them have managed to do a toss to hand and it takes countless and countless of attempts. ^_^

First and foremost, I am really 27 (as of July 2010). Not 37 -.- . please don't let Veron mislead you. zzzzzz.

Age aside, I am really very happy to see Spectrum blog being active all over again! This blog is where a lot of memories are kept. Whenever I am stressed, or feel lost in life. I will always come back to this place. So please please please do whatever it takes to continue this blog, and keep the Spectrum Spirit going!

As mentioned during our short meeting last wed, Spectrum actually started when I took over in 2005 from my super senior Willie. Spectrum is the place where I started coaching. Whenever I thought it was impossible to push on, my senior would tell me that ''so long as you put your heart to it, everything will fall into place eventually.''

And things did. I only came to hall 13 when I was in year 2, so besides the hall vice-president; I didn't know anybody else. All I knew was I am here to assemble a cheerleading team for the HO2006. So I went to approach my neighbours. The foreign students. The anti-socialists. Yes, I pratically knocked on every single door in hall 13.

Team Spectrum turns 5 this year. This is a team which possesses a rich culture, rich tradition and has people you can rely on. i honestly hope to see Spectrum picking up where your seniors last left off. Don't give up on cheerleading. And NEVER give up on yourself!

I can see big changes here since the last time I logged in ( I am pretty sure it wasn't that long ago okay). 2.42am. backache, shoulderache, legs... not so bad (but I got train with my legs k!) but still checking out spectrum blog. hahaha while most of the rest are still have steamboat I guess.

I feel like posting a blog today because I feel really happy that everyone is trying so hard today and everyone's improving, bit by bit. Huiyang trying out her front tuck, Youjin tossing like mad these days, Suelin attempting the gladiator, Veron doing her level up heel stretch, the junior bases popping and reloading like nobody's business. Everyone is trying hard to achieve something at the end of the training and it makes ME want to accomplish something too. I guess that's how we stay motivated even though we may be shagged out.

So GUYS MUST JIAYOU JIAYOU JIAYOU ADD OIL ADD OIL ADD OIL! Show ourselves (and others) that we can do it. YES WE CAN.

Hey guys! Finally got the time to make my first post!! whoot!!! anyways really thanks to those who have contributed to this blog and make it so lively and interesting!! thanks Veron, Suzie, Jin for always keeping the blog alive! haha!! anyway a new year have begun for Team Spectrum... this year is definitely a different one... in the past we have always been on our own.. with the seniors to thank for never failing to train up the new batch of cheerleaders... but this year, like what veron had said, we got to step out of our comfort zone of always having seniors to sayang us... hiring a coach definitely brings us out of the comfort zone and really show us what we have been lacking of... anyway special thanks to Vincent for giving us so much advice and insights... Now a reflection on my side.. i remembered before i joined Spectrum, i doesnt really have a good impression of cheerleading... but after joining Spectrum for 2 weeks, it really changed my views totally.. Now, Spectrum have become a part of my life, bringing me through sorrows and laughter.. Spectrum have given me a family in hall.. Spectrum made me who I am today... and i will defense Spectrum aggressively if anyone dares to take advantage of us... haha! anyway, I kinda got some posters online to express what i feel / believe in SPECTRUM...

Spectrum has never engaged an external coach. We have always been self-taught. A few months back, I thought that we needed to step out of our comfort zone, expand our scope of trainings and up our skills levels, since I personally felt that we've been rather stagnant.

Until recently (sept 2010), Spectrum enagaged the services of Vincent (Head Coach of Wildcards) as our first ever external coach.

Vincent has indeed introduced many changes in our trainings, and pushed us for many stunts that we once thought we were incapable of achieving. However, Vincent alone cannot create miracles for Spectrum. It must be two-way. We have to open our minds and adapt to changes that are taking place. We must show our coach that we are worth his time and efforts. Just like KR Stepper's motto: Blame No One, Expect Nothing, Do Something.

Hi Spectrum,

I believe you all had received Cheng Yee's e-mail on the list of cheerleading squads, both international and local. She sent the e-mail on her own initiative, spent hours collating the links and searching for the teams' websites, with the sole intention of exposing all of us to cheer, and what we can aim to achieve in future. Good job cheng yee, and thanks a lot! *HUGS* So guys, do visit the websites, or search for the teams' videos in youtube, you'll be amazed at what others can do, but more importantly, it can give you a better idea of what you can do too!

One of the teams she mentioned in the e-mail is KR Steppers. Like us, KR is a hall team. Like us, they started from humble beginnings. KR is one of the teams I really look up to, and when I read the blogpost below, I was really touched.

The entry talks about how KR was formed, how they stand up strong amidst the obstacles, and perservered to be where they are now. The message is simple: Do not forget where you came from. Do not take what you have now for granted.

I did not come from the pioneer batch of Spectrum, nowhere near, cos I'm not as old as Uncle Chaang (oops). But I heard a lot about them. I can feel the Spectrum spirit they left behind. The closest you can get to them physically is lying on the (smelly) mats and the crash mats. Hahaha. Fyi, our seniors bought the crash mat using their own money, for the intention of practicing our gymnast more safely. So, I get really pissed off whenever I see people lying/sleeping on the crash mat during training times. OKay, that aside, I am really grateful of the foundation that our pioneers laid down for us.

Stepping down as Vice-captain is truly a happy thing to me. Not because I can finally put down all the sai kangs and nua, but because I know Spectrum has grown one more generation. I know I have found the right group of people to entrust Spectrum to, and I trust that they have the same passion that I have for Spectrum.

No, I don't feel emotional at all, because I know I'm still part of Spectrum, and Spectrum will always be a part of me. From year 1 till year 4, my entire uni life is filled with memories of Spectrum (and hall 13). Almost everyone who knows me knows that I am a Spectrum cheerleader. And I'm very proud of it.

I can still vividly remember the days when I just joined Spectrum. Together with yin xue, adeline and teresa, we endured stretching, locking exercises, going up and down shoulderstands and elevators. The seniors were like angels, and chaangru, the devil. Hahaha. They would always protect us from chaang, divert chaang's attention away from us, and console us when we get f**k updownleftright by chaang. Chaang is the big baddie. But without him, there would be no Spectrum. He is the person who formed Spectrum. He is also our coach, critique, direction-setter, team manager, music maker, nagger and many many things. He is now the Vice-Chairman of Wildcards. I know some of our seniors will go, "veron, dont por cr so much, he will fly." but I really remember him doing a lot of things for Spectrum. And I never truly wholeheartedly appreciate it until I become the vice-captain myself. Every team needs someone like him. Chaangru, even though you have left Spectrum, I still want to say Thank You.

The next person I want to thank is Goh Kah Xian, now known as Victor Wu Zhao Heng, for convenience sake I will call him uncle. Uncle was my HGL (anouka!!), and also the the person who brought me into Spectrum. If not for him, Spectrum would probably have one less pretty flyer (LOL! =P) Uncle would always be very patient when he's teaching stunts, very encouraging, and very impartial. Although he's very busy, he would always make it for cheer trainings. I don't know why, but I feel that he's happiest when he is cheering. He taught me a lot, about cheer, life and work. And I believe he has taught many of the current Spectrum members a lot too. I feel so weird thanking him here, but yah, thanks uncle!

I dont want this to become a thanking entry so the last two people I wanna mention here are Wen Feng and Sirong. My favourite Captain-cum-topfly, and my favourite mid-tier, respectively. Ah feng has really guided me a lot in terms of managing and training the team. Besides, she constantly pushes me to go beyond my comfort zone and she's always always there whenever I need her. Xiao rong was my GL (anouka!!) and she's the sweeeetest girl ever! She always has a kind word to spare and gives good advices. Ahhhh I miss them soooo much! Thanks ah feng and xiao rong, pls pls pls come back for training more often!!

Being a cheerleader has changed me in many ways. It made me a better person, I feel. The major reason being that cheerleading is a team sports. Every single member counts! I can do hundreds of project in school but I cannot truly say that I am a team player. Being a cheerleader gives me the damn right to say "I am a team player!". HAHAHA this may sound very mindless to some, but that's how I feel. The way we train together, discuss our failures, continue from where we fall, spur each other, celebrate our successes and never giving up on each other - that is a team. I love my team.

Being a vice-captain taught me a lot, too. A team player recognises that every member is unique, a leader identifies that uniqueness, and develops it to contribute to the team. No one is perfect, but in a team, we complement each other. Just like I am not the perfect vice-captain, but my team mates gave me their utmost support and trust that enabled me to do my best for them. Sometimes, when I'm really tired and depressed and frustrated that I am sacrificing so much time for Spectrum, the mere presence of the team being there for trainings makes me feel that everything is worth it. This one year is not without obstacles and setbacks, but every situation I face, I learn something out of it, and I emerge a stronger person.

There is so much I can say about being a team member and a vice-cap, but that would be too long to read, so I'll stop here.

I remember every single detail from my journey in Spectrum, every face/name that comes and go, every stunts I did, every performances - these are all memories that I cherish. However, my journey is not over yet, and there are still more memories to collect.

HI GUYS!!!! A very warm welcome to all the new members of TEAM SPECTRUM.. don't worry I guess we'll feature you guys soon.. It has been been a few weeks since our cheer clinic and I am happy to say that we have many enthusiatic new members who are passionate and determined. And they can stretch better than me. :X

I made a BLOGPOST on our F1 performance about 3 weeks ago but I did not post it until today so please take a look at what I wrote about our performance k? It's on 13 September. To view the video please scroll down on the right and watch the second video, proudly uploaded by our IT officer.

OK cheer clinic! It was held 2 weeks ago, 23 September 2010, with the purpose of exposing our hall residents to the world of cheerleading. The seniors were up and ready by 7pm and we patiently waited for hall residents to come down as though it was a chinese wedding banquet. Kudos to those who came on time! Like Suelin. :)

We did some stretching with the hall residents and after a short opening speech by our new captain CHOON FU, we started off with the ultimate cheerleading experience! Everyone got a taste of locking, going up an elevator, trust fall, doing on ground extension and even trying out a pyramid. Some year 2 seniors like our current JCRC President Amin and Publication Secretary Kim Fatt also gamely took the challenge of going up an elevator too. Personally, I have never heard Kim saying so much swear words at one time. Mwahahahaha.

There were plenty of fun, laughter and screams as girls (and GUYS!) got to try out things beyond their comfort zone. Hopefully, at the end of the cheer clinic, we truely let them have a taste of what cheerleading is and that they will be interested to join us in TEAM SPECTRUM.

Which they did! MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

HALL THIRTEEN CHEER CLINIC

After a night of fun and laughter, we hoped all who attended the cheer clinic have a better idea of what cheerleading is about, and even got to know the cheerleaders in hall 13 better! We are really happy to have met all of you! Do say hi when you see us around in hall :D

Following the clinic, we will be starting our proper training on monday, 27sept, 7p.m. Venue will either be at function hall 12, or blk 64 carpark (depending on which is available). We will start to teach new-comers the basics in cheerleading stunts, how to spot for your team mates, and learn some gymnastics as well. You are bound to learn something new here!

For those who missed the cheer clinic, don't worry!! You are still welcome to join us on monday! Just come in your sports attire and shoes (girls, do remember to wear tights), and approach any of us! If you're shy, grab your roomie/neighbour/og mate/senior to come along with you. All are welcome!
